Who
We Are
The
House
The ideal country home of housing reformer Robert Treat Paine and his
family, Stonehurst is an American masterpiece resulting from the career-long collaboration
between Henry Hobson Richardson and Frederick Law Olmsted, leading
designers who broadly influenced the way Americans live and relate to
their environment.
19th-century visitors,
so taken with the grandeur of the place, were moved to write poems about
it. Today, Stonehurst is a National Historic Landmark owned by the City
of Waltham offering unique lessons in architecture, landscape design and
community planning through public tours, programs and events throughout
the year. The City takes great pride in the role Stonehurst plays in
fostering community, collaboration and innovation.
The
Grounds
Visitors
may stroll the grounds or hike the woodland trails that wind through
the 109 acres of surrounding Storer Conservation Lands. This precious
natural resource is overseen by the Waltham Conservation Commission.
Stonehurst, the Robert Treat Paine Estate, and the Storer Conservation
Lands are owned and operated by the City of Waltham, Massachusetts. The
non-profit Robert Treat Paine Historical Trust works in partnership with
the City to preserve this National Historic Landmark and maintain it as
an educational resource for a broad audience.
Waltham is home to a number of historic sites and museums including
