Exploring the Back Stairs: A Lecture and Tour

  • Stonehurst 100 Robert Treat Paine Drive Waltham, MA 02452 USA (map)

Domestic servants made everyday life in grand homes possible, but their identities and roles within the household have long been hidden.

A lecture by Jennifer Pustz, a museum historian at Historic New England, illustrates the diversity of domestic service in New England over the 19th and 20th centuries by focusing on three Historic New England properties: Castle Tucker, Roseland Cottage, and the Codman Estate.

After the lecture, enjoy a tour of the City of Waltham's Stonehurst. Ann Clifford, Stonehurst curator, focuses on servant life at this seasonal country home of housing reformer Robert Treat Paine.

Cosponsored by the City of Waltham, Historic New England and the Friends of Stonehurst.
