Four Continents. Many Craftsmen. One Masterwork.

Architect H.H. Richardson showed his affinity for preindustrial times in this powerful portrait.

Architect H.H. Richardson showed his affinity for preindustrial times in this powerful portrait.

The Paine house by architect Henry Hobson Richardson was a new “distinctly American” art form. Outside, Stonehurst is rooted in the New England landscape. Inside, it celebrates the blending of cultures that defines this nation of immigrants.

The Paine family and their architect H.H. Richardson believed deeply in the dignity of work and the rights of workers. In response to dehumanizing labor practices of the Industrial Age, they supported a revival of traditional arts and crafts.

Not only were the Paines early patrons of Richardson and many artisans, they built the headquarters for Boston’s Central Labor Union and funded trade schools open to “all races and all creeds.”

To celebrate the restoration of the house exterior in 2021, we honor the artisans of many backgrounds who created Stonehurst. Look for a new entry and video clip each month….
